What is justice4victims.org?
"..Offenders are not intimidated by the consequences
of their behaviour - we intend to see that change."
... justice4victims.org is a web-based organization which we intend to build and run with you. Its aim is to provide support for victims and potential victims of violent crime, who feel denied justice and protection, and as a platform from which to launch and co-ordinate an active campaign for the return of British justice - justice which finally atones for the effect of violence on the victims.
Regarding the conception of this project; whilst working academically and professionally with the victims of crime as well as violent offenders, the founders of the organization noticed a distinct imbalance - only one general charity set up in support of crime victims, compared with an abundant network which assists offenders - although we work impartially, this strikes us as an extreme injustice.
In a culture characterized by Human Rights and rehabilitation discourse, we feel the balance must be tipped to re-introduce the factor of justice to those considering violent criminal behaviour. We are now living in a country where a "risk-assessment" refers only to the risk of criminal justice professionals being sacked, sued or publicly condemned, and where police resources are more heavily invested into criminalizing road-users than protecting them from violent crime, and pursuing those that speak offensively, instead of those that violently offend.
More damaging though, in our opinion, is the obsessive ideology of this country's politicians that all offenders should be rehabilitated. In our professional experience many can be, but very few successfully are (almost 80% of violent offenders in 2005 were being reconvicted). Yet still the language of punishment and public protection is clearly no longer welcome in the professional arena.
The figures severely undermine the efficiency, even the purpose, of our criminal justice agencies. A reported two-thirds of crime victims feel their right to justice has been betrayed by a system they are legally compelled to rely on, in favour of the rights of the offender to reintegrate.
We at justice4victims.org consider this totally unacceptable, and call for a vote-of-no-confidence in the collective criminal justice agencies. We feel the police are no longer doing the job we pay them to do, and sentencing policy is now directed entirely toward opportunities, not punishment, for the offenders. (We consider it of no small relevance that the
rehabilitative approach to sentencing costs the state on average one-tenth that of the punitive approach.)
That said, justice4victims.org does not necessarily support the Incarceration Method, nor do we condemn it; this organization pursues your proposals of genuinely creative methods of justice, and will seek to see them put into action. Our FORUM is the "engine-room" where we intend to make this happen. Offenders are clearly not intimidated by the punitive consequences of their behaviour - we intend to see that change.
Users of the site can study comprehensive criminal legislation and the motivations of political agenda, can gain criminological insight into their offenders' behaviour (CRIMINOLOGY page), and have access to services and organizations to help them cope with the emotional impact of violent victimization, via our USEFUL LINKS page. The w
ebsite is fully interactive, and encourages users to share their experiences and advice, and even give their opinion in sentencing in each other's real-life cases, which we intend to use as a campaign tool. We also aim to support community projects, however small or ambitious.
Further additions to the site will be totally responsive to feedback from users, to ensure that we build this organization together and in the public interest. If ignored, we have very little faith in our authorities to redeem our justice; this problem is too far gone to simply improve without public involvement. We believe it is time to overrule our employees; if you wish to take the first small steps that begin every journey, go to our FORUM, or e-mail us at:
